Did you know that the humble tomato plant, (the green fruit, foliage and stems) has a sneaky substance called solanine in it? A large amount of the plant would need to be ingested, however solanine poisoning can cause nasty gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. diarrhoea and vomiting), lethargy, weakness, and even confusion.
Ripened tomatoes contain less solanine and cooked red tomatoes are a fantastic source of fibre for our dogs, which is why you will often see them in the ingredients list of dog food recipes.
We are nearly at the end of August, my greenhouse is full of green tomatoes, with it feeling like autumn today, I am wondering if they will ever ripen!
