The Golden Retriever

Such softies, the Golden Retrievers are a very popular family breed. And they are so smart, they are in the top 10 oo the smart breed dog list! (In line behind Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds and Labradors).

So this makes them easy to train and explains why they are so popular as guide dogs.

The Golden Retriever was originally bred as a gundog and has a naturally gentle grip called a “soft mouth” as they don’t damage things they carry in their mouths.  They are also as members of search and rescue teams because of their “soft mouth” and amazing sense of smell.

Did you know that Golden Retriever’s faces turn grey or white as they age and their coat gets darker?

They love water (well most do!) and will take any opportunity to have a swim.  They have a two-layer coat which keeps the water out.

Some of the conditions Golden Retrievers are more prone to developing include:

  • Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
  • Eye problemssuch as Cataracts
  • Ichthyosis – a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair.

Natural remedies and supplements can be a fantastic way of supporting your dog for known conditions, and there is a plethora on the market to choose from too. If you would like to explore your options, you can book a free 15 minute consult by clicking the link below
